Last year's YouTube Rewind was the most hated video ever, this year's is not looking good

Swedish Youtube star PewDiePie made an appearance on the list of top creators for the first time in two years.

YouTube's Rewind video — an annual wrap of the platform's year that was — has changed its format after the 2018 iteration of the video became the most disliked video of all time, garnering more than 16 million thumbs down.

In the caption, YouTube admits last year's video was not its best work: "In 2018, we made something you didn't like. For Rewind 2019 let's see what you DID like."

"Celebrating the creators, music and moments that mattered most to you in 2019," the caption read.

But the video posted earlier on Friday — titled For The Record — has still garnered more dislikes than likes, currently at 707,000 likes vs 1.2 million dislikes, and counting.

Unlike Spotify's annual end-of-the-year wrap, which has remained relatively similar each year by individually tailoring to the user of the music streaming service, YouTube is taking a different approach to last year and highlighting the millions or billions of likes and views accumulated by its top clips and creators.

This year's video counts down the most liked or viewed videos of the year into categories such as most liked creator, music, beauty videos and breakout stars, including 44-year-old retired Pakistani cricket superstar Shoaib Akhtar.

It also has not shied away from featuring controversial creators like David Dobrik and Swedish star PewDiePie, who made an appearance on the list for the first time in two years as the most viewed creator of the year.

PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, was not included in the 2017 edition due to promoting anti-Semitic content and the use of racial slurs.

Last year he was involved in a high-profile online battle with Indian music channel T-Series in the race for 100 million subscribers.

The 2018 Rewind video received overwhelmingly negative feedback with 17 million dislikes dwarfing its 2.6 million thumbs up.

The video featured a handful of prominent YouTubers, but kicked off with Hollywood star Will Smith, with many claiming that it was "awkward".
