Last year's Headteacher of the Year winner encourages nominations for Scottish Education Awards

A PROUD headteacher heaped praise on her school when Education Secretary John Swinney came to visit.

The Deputy First Minister was at St Ninian’s RC Primary School in Livingston – where Lisamaria Purdie won Headteacher of the Year last year – to help promote this year’s Scottish Education Awards.

The awards, held every year by the Daily Record and Scottish Government, celebrate hard work and success in our schools.

The school’s P7 leadership team welcomed Swinney, along with Gayle Gorman, CEO of Education Scotland and West Lothian Council leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick.

Pupils told of their pride in the school’s achievements, which also include winning a UNICEF Rights Respecting School award and a sportscotland Sporting School gold prize.

Purdie, now on secondment with West Lothian Council to help other schools in the area improve, said: “I was so pleased to win Headteacher of the Year as it recognised the hard work of our staff, pupils, their families and the community.

“At St Ninian’s, we want to make a difference and help the children be the best they can be. “We’re particularly proud of the relationships we have with parents and families. St Ninian’s is a very happy school. Children learn best when they feel safe, valued and happy. Their health and wellbeing is fundamental to everything we do.”

Gorman said: “So many people are involved in supporting children and young people be successful, and achieve their very best in education.”

Swinney encouraged schools throughout Scotland to enter the 2020 awards.

He said: “Now is the time to nominate who you would like to see recognised for their hard work, determination and commitment to changing lives.

“I encourage learners, parents and staff working in schools and establishments across Scotland to look at the categories and nominate now, so we can showcase the amazing talent we have in Scotland.”
