Last-second victory in nail-biting final stuns Chase viewers

A doctor who was the only contestant to make it through to the final round of The Chase treated viewers to a nail-biting race to the finish as he faced down Chaser Anne 'The Governess' Hegerty.

Sandy from County Tyrone amassed £6,000 in the cash builder round of the ITV quiz and was then the only one of four contestants to make it through to the finale.

The A&E doctor said he would treat the nurses at his Derry hospital to a night out if he won, to show how much they are appreciated.

Then he managed to answer 16 questions correctly - leaving The Governess to try to overtake him, reports LiverpoolEcho.

Normally 16 would not be a challenge for a skilled Chaser, but Hegarty slipped up several times, leaving Sandy to push her back by jumping in with the correct answers.

And finally, with seconds to spare, Anne missed the last question and left Sandy with the whole £6,000 cash prize.

And fans took to Twitter in their droves after the against the odds shock victory.

Badger said: "Excellent, well done to Sandy the doctor from Derry, the whole A&E dept out on the town! They all deserve it, respect."

Harry Paye said: "Sandy we salute you!"

Priya said: "£6k on a night out! Well done Sandy."

And Declan Ferguson said: "OMG how embarrassing is that for Anne??"

*The Chase continues at 5pm on ITV
