The last-surviving 9/11 search and rescue dog has been treated to a sweet 16th birthday party.

"New York hero" Bretagne’s first mission with handler Denise Corless was working at ground zero in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks 14 years ago.

Now believed to be the only remaining rescue dog who helped those trapped under rubble that day, BarkPost and 1 Hotel Central Park organised a special day to “celebrate her birthday and to thank her for her incredible service”.

The dog, who is soon turning 16, was flown from Texas to New York City, along with Ms Corless, where she was treated to a luxury hotel suite, a ride in a vintage city taxi, and a billboard expressing the city’s gratitude in Times Square.

The day was topped off with a surprise birthday party for Bretagne, complete with cake, presents, party hats and a new collar.
