Last-minute romantic getaways for two you can book in Wales this month

Romance has slipped to the bottom of priorities for many couples.

Between lockdowns, being forced to spend all day together and a lack of boundaries between work and home life over the past year, it's hard to find time to get away together.

Restrictions might be easing but the traffic light system for foreign holidays can make it difficult to plan ahead.

The white sands of The Maldives or the blue seas of Greece might be tempting, but why not play it safe and go for a romantic staycation in Wales?

These last minute getaways all have availability in August.

Gwesty Cymru, Aberystwyth

Gwesty Cymru in Aberstwyth (South Wales Echo)

The highlight of this hotel is its incredible sea view, overlooking Cardigan Bay, which you can even see from some of the bathrooms.

It is a splash of luxury located in the heart of Aberystwyth’s Victorian promenade, and small enough to make it the perfect private getaway.

It only has eight rooms and a restaurant. Each room has been designed with warm colours to reflect the romantic seaside setting of Aberystwyth.

The Coal Exchange Hotel, Cardiff Bay

The Exchange Building in the Cardiff Docks area (Richard Williams)

Steeped in history and luxury, this hotel in the capital has stylish and contemporary rooms with Queen beds, double spa baths and waterfall showers.

The Grade II listed building has been used for film and television including Dr Who, Torchwood, and Casualty.

Built in 1888, the building was formerly a grand centre for coal and shipping trading.

It has since been restored to its former glory with original features.

Roch Castle, Haverfordwest

Be king or queen of one of these castles you can stay in dating from different eras in Wales' history (Roch Castle Hotel)

Located a short 20-minute drive from St David’s, Roch Castle is sure to make you feel like royalty for a night or two.

Previous celebrity guests include Tom Cruise. If you want to explore Pembrokeshire with your partner or simply want to catch sight of an A-lister, this is potentially the place.

It is also the perfect spot for Game of Thrones fans, with its striking resemblance to Winterfell Castle.

The Great House Hotel, Bridgend

Situated 10 minutes from Porthcawl, and a half-hour drive from Cardiff and Swansea, this charming hotel is the perfect rural setting for a romantic getaway.

The rooms are warm and cosy but the real star is the restaurant, showcasing the best of Welsh food.

The award-winning restaurant has been named Country Restaurant of the Year, twice, and uses locally sourced ingredients

This rustic, rural retreat offers a quiet countryside escape.

Chateau Rhianfa, Anglesey

Chateau Rhianfa (Ian Cooper/North Wales Live)

Last is this magnificent Grade II listed Chateau overlooking the Menai Strait and Snowdonia.

It was made for romance, as it was originally given as a gift by Sir John Hay Williams to his wife Lady Sarah in 1849, inspired by the Lady’s sketches of Chateaus in the Loire Valley, France.

Stay in one of the 27 bedrooms and dine in the multi-award winning restaurant.
