Last glimpse into famous old Liverpool church before it vanishes forever

Pictures taken by an urban explorer give a fascinating last glimpse inside a famous old Liverpool church that has just been demolished.

Trinity Methodist Church occupied a prime location on West Derby Road, Tuebrook, and is to be replaced by a four-storey “multi-use” development.

The most recent church was built in the 1960s, with an extension added in 1966, but Ordnance Survey historical maps show a church at the site in the 1880s.

The ECHO was given permission to use these images, which appeared first on the 28dayslater.co.uk urban exploration website.

They reveal an interior of peeling plasterwork and discarded hymn books, with fascinating details including old Scout meeting signs and unwanted wooden pews in the central worship space under an intricately designed ceiling.

Bulldozers recently moved in to clear the site, which sits between Clifton Road and Alton Road.

When the building was put up for sale, estate agents highlighted its “prominent” position on West Derby Road and close proximity to Newsham Park and said the site was suitable for a “range of potential commercial uses”.

Prospective buyers were told: “The premises comprises a purpose-built Methodist church with ancillary accommodation to include offices, workrooms, concert room and reception facility.

“We understand that the original structure was built in the 1960s, with the three-storey element fronting Alton Road being built some time shortly afterwards.”

Planning documents show asbestos, which was found within walls and flooring in the building, had to be removed before demolition could begin.

Larch Housing is replacing the church with a four-storey block with shops on the ground floor and managed accommod-ation of 17 flats and a community room on the floors above.
