Last-ditch Steve Clarke plea to be made by Kilmarnock as SFA look to get their man

Kilmarnock chief Billy Bowie will make a last-ditch plea to Steve Clarke not to take the Scotland job.

Bowie is willing to play hardball with the SFA over the £200,000 compensation for his manager. He looks to be fighting a losing battle in his bid to change Clarke’s mind.

Clarke is keen to replace Alex McLeish as national team boss and Hampden CEO Ian
Maxwell is confident of getting his man but Bowie is refusing to give up hope and will make his pitch tomorrow.

That’s also when the SFA will make an official approach to Killie and attempt to seal the deal with an offer of one-year’s compensation.

It’s believed personal terms have been agreed in principle with Clarke’s representatives and Maxwell wants to unveil him as Scotland’s boss by the end of the day, unless their vital talks over payments with Bowie collapse.

Clarke has yet to decide on a Scotland backroom staff but he is expected to name his first squad next week, with the vital Euro 2020 ties against Cyprus and Belgium in three weeks.
