Last day to comment on Leith biomass

Today is the final day that people can have their opinions on Forth Energy's proposals for a biomass plant officially taken on board.

The consultation period started with a heated meeting in Drummond Community High School between local people and developers Forth Energy. Read our report here.

You can see Forth Energy's plans in full on its website.

Forth Energy is also working on plans in Dundee, where the application is slightly ahead of Edinburgh's in the planning process.

The local paper there, The Courier, reports that some Tayside locals are angry that Forth Energy was allowed to publish new documents after the four-week publication closed.

The number of supporters of the biomass plant known to one of the Leith area's local MSPs has doubled - to two.

Shirley-Anne Somerville said she obtained official statistics from the Scottish Government showing how many people had written to them about the plans. She said:

"About a year ago I carried out a small consultation with residents living near the site of the proposed plant and it was clear then that public opinion was against the biomass plant proposals.

"Nevertheless, I was very pleasantly surprised to see how that opposition has grown with over 1,200 members of the public taking the time to make their objections known to the planning authorities. That speaks volumes for the organisation and imagination of local campaigners.

"The fact that a well-funded PR drive and several public presentations by Forth Energy have inspired the support of just two individuals says it all really. The plans are deeply flawed and the biomass plant should never see the light of day."

Forth Energy was offered a chance to comment but declined.

Comments on the plans can be sent to leithbiomass@scotland.gsi.gov.uk and must include a full name, address and email address.
