Last day to apply for up to £600 in energy help - see if you’re eligible

Households who have missed out on energy support have just hours left to apply for help worth up to £600.

The grants are available to those who didn’t receive the £400 energy discount over the winter, and households who use alternative fuels.

The majority of alternative fuel households should have received £200 automatically - but if you didn't, and you believe you're eligible, you'll need to apply.

All households in Northern Ireland should have received a £200 alternative fuel payment – regardless of what type of heating you use – paid at the same time as the £400.

This means some people should have received help worth up to £600.

The deadline to apply for these Government schemes is today (May 31).

Energy Bills Support Scheme - £400

Almost all households should have received £400 this winter to help with rising energy bills.

The money was split over six monthly instalments between October and March for households in England, Wales and Scotland, and was worth £66 or £67.

Those paying by direct debit or after receiving a bill will have had the money automatically paid back into their bank account or added to their energy account.

If you have a smart meter, the money should have also been paid automatically back into your energy account.

Those on traditional prepayment meters received vouchers which they needed to redeem.

Northern Ireland households should have received their payment in one lump, instead of monthly instalments.

If you didn't receive the £400 - for example, because you live in a park home or your landlord gets their energy from a commercial contract - then you need to apply for the help now.

There are different links to apply depending on if you live in England, Wales and Scotland, or if you live in Northern Ireland.

You'll need to provide proof of your address if you're not registered for council tax, and you should get a response within six weeks.

You don't need to apply if you, or your landlord, have a domestic energy meter and your bill is paid directly to an energy supplier.

Alternative Fuel Payment - £200

You may be entitled to the Alternative Fuel Payment if you live in England, Wales and Scotland, and you use tank or bottled gas, liquid petroleum gas, oil, wood or solid fuel as your main source of heating.

All households in Northern Ireland will also receive this payment, regardless of how they heat their home.

Most people should have received this support automatically in February but if you didn’t, and you think you may be eligible, then you’ll need to apply.

You can apply here if you live in England, Wales or Scotland, or by calling 0808 175 3287.

You’ll need to provide proof of the alternative fuels you’ve purchased since June 1, 2022, totalling at least £200.

Once you have applied, you should receive an email or letter within six weeks, confirming whether you'll get the payment.

The money will then be sent as a bank transfer.

Households in Northern Ireland should have received the £200 paid at the same time as their £400 energy bill grant.

If not, you can apply now online or by calling 0808 175 3894.
