Last Christmas review: Flawless festive rom-com could steal Love Actually's crown

Sixteen years after Love Actually earned a generation of fans, is another British film set to steal the rom-com festive crown?

Last Christmas sees Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding star as Kate and Tom, who find love in a jukebox jaunt set to George Michael’s biggest hits.

Clarke is perfect as scatty Kate – think a Bridget Jones for 2019.

Michelle Yeoh is flawless as Santa, the owner of the Christmas store Kate works in, and Emma Thompson is Adelia, Kate’s mother.

Both steal the show with their cutting one-liners – particularly Thompson, whose self-penned script fizzes and zips along.

It’s political too, with a Brexit subplot that tugs the heart-strings. But it’s the soundtrack which elevates this film to a whole new level.

Highlights include Faith, Freedom ‘90, Too Funky and the MTV Unplugged version of Praying For Time, one of George’s personal favourites.

For his fans, there is an extra special treat too, the new song This Is How (We Want You To Get High).

In 2013, Thompson visited George at his London home, where she heard the track for the first time.

She knew it would be perfect for the film. And it is.

London, too, is heart and centre of the film, with all the capital’s sights never looking more beautiful in the Christmas lights.

Last Christmas is released in UK cinemas on November 15, 2019.
