LAST CHANCE to register to compete in 2019 World Transplant Games Newcastle-Gateshead

Inspiring athletes are set to compete in Newcastle and Gateshead this summer as Tyneside hosts the 2019 World Transplant Games.

The games are open to athletes from around the world, who have survived debilitating illnesses through getting transplant surgery.

The World Transplant Games will be held at venues across Newcastle and Gateshead between August 17 and August 24. The event celebrates the 'gift of life' and aims to raise awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation, by highlighting the health and transplant patients can achieve.

Around 2,500 participants from more than 60 countries are expected to compete - but anyone wanting to join them must register imminently.

If you - or someone you know - has had a transplant and wants to compete in the games - then the deadline for entries is Wednesday, May 1 .

Sports include athletics, distance running, golf, squash, volleyball, badminton, badminton, swimming, cycling, bowling, archery, basketball and tennis.

Competitors must obtain  medical information from their doctor and complete a form online.

Lynne Holt, Team GB Manager, said: "We are looking forward to welcoming around 2,500 participants from over 60 countries who will be competing at venues across the North East. Team GB is the largest team with 350 athletes which includes 35 juniors and 15 live donors.

"All of the athletes are winners having survived debilitating illnesses, getting through transplant surgery and are now fit for life - thanks to donors and their families supporting their decision to donate. My team are so excited to be competing in front of a home crowd and are committed to training hard with the ultimate goal of winning medals for their country and in thanks to their donors.”
