Last chance entry for Junior Great North Run as child places are snapped up

Children's events for this year's Great North Run weekend seem set to be a runaway success following a surge of interest in taking part.

Sporting action for young ones is always a popular part of the run-up to the annual half-marathon and it seems that families can't wait to take part in the 2022 event.

Entry to the Mini Great North Run, which traditionally takes place the day before the main event, has already closed after all its 5,000 available places sold out.

Now there is a last chance to enter for the Junior Great North Run which, like the Mini run, will take place on Saturday, September 10, ahead of the Great North Run on Sunday, September 11.

Where the Mini event, for three to eight-year-olds, is a 1.5km run around the Quayside, the Junior course is 4km and aimed at children aged from nine to 16.

Entries for this are still available but are selling fast.

The Great Run Company chief executive Paul Foster said: “It’s so encouraging to see the response to this year’s event and we can’t wait to welcome all these budding athletes in September.

“Whether this is their first ever running experience or it’s become an annual event for the whole family, nothing beats the Mini Great North Run finish line celebrations or seeing so many youngsters wearing their medals with pride.”

Runners taking part will start out on the Newcastle Quayside before heading over the Swing Bridge to the opposite bank of the river.

The final stretch of the course, as with the Mini, then takes children over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to cross a finish line back on the Newcastle side.
