Laser show to be held at Mumbles Pier after devastating fire

Mumbles Pier will rise "like a phoenix to rise from the ashes" when a spectacular laser show fills the sky just over two months after a devastating fire destroyed the building which once housed one of the city's favourite former nightclubs. The show will take place at Mumbles Pier on Thursday, November 3.

The completely free event will feature three hours packed full of entertainment for the whole family as a more environmentally-friendly option taking place two days before Bonfire Night. The event, organised by Mumbles Community Council and Mumbles Pier, opens at 5.30pm ahead of a performance from Morriston Orpheus Choir at 6pm. The laser show will then begin at 6.30pm and there will be music, a fairground, and food stalls until 8.30pm. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

It comes after a devastating fire broke out at the shore end of Mumbles Pier on August 31 which at its height, saw seven fire engines on the scene with crews battling the blaze for several hours. Cinderella's nightclub, which most recently operated as a community space, and its neighbouring Copperfish restaurant were badly damaged by the fire.

A spokeswoman for Mumbles Community Council said: "Mumbles Pier came to us before the fire and said: 'We would really like to collaborate with you.' We thought it was a lovely idea and the lasers shining off the water will make it look even lovelier than it would on land.

"Then the fire happened literally the next day and we thought it was not going to happen anymore but thankfully it can still go ahead. People were so upset after the fire and it was losing a part of our youth – people loved Cinderella's and it is iconic for the people of Swansea. It was a really emotive subject for a good few days around the fire. We thought this would be a brilliant way for the phoenix to rise from the ashes. Everyone can come down and celebrate our lovely pier. It is something different and it is something completely different for Swansea.

"Morriston Orpheus Choir are also singing for us down there. Paul Durden recently passed away, the co-writer of Twin Town. The choir performed Myfanwy as part of a collaboration of choirs at the end of the film and they'll be performing it again on the night along with some other songs, as a nod to a local legend. We thought it would be a nice tribute.

"The event has really caught people's attention and the free tickets are going to go very fast. There are only going to be 2,400 tickets released."

The choir will be performing on a raised platform near the café and the lasers will be directed towards the pier car park, which will be closed to vehicles. Bracelet Bay car park will remain open. The event is completely free but it has a limited capacity for health and safety reasons. If you wish to attend you will need a ticket, which you can apply for via the Mumbles Community Council and Mumbles Pier websites. Tickets will be released on Friday, October 7, at 9am. They can be secured after that time by clicking here.
