A Las Vegas teen has been charged with murder after crashing his car at 100 miles per hour. Authorities allege that 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez intentionally slammed his Infiniti G37 into a queue of vehicles waiting at a stop light. The collision resulted in the death of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Adilene Duran Rincon.
Rincon, who was pregnant at the time had been riding in the passenger seat while Gutierrez sped through a 45 mph zone before colliding with traffic at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard as per the Daily Mail. Gutierrez’s vehicle was going roughly 100 mph prior to the crash. Unfortunately, Rincon did not survive the incident, but Gutierrez did and he was soon arrested for reckless driving.
Investigators claim Jose Gutierrez intentionally crashed the car
Footage of the incident was captured by a traffic camera and shows Gutierrez’s car colliding with a line of cars at high speed with one vehicle spinning out and bursting into flames. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson claimed that the evidence showed Gutierrez “made no attempts to brake” before the deadly crash occurred.
“We believe based on all of the evidence to date, including a very descriptive video, that his actions were intentional, which gives rise to a charge of murder.”
The 12-car collision resulted in the deaths of Adilene Duran Rincon and Edward Garcia, a 38-year-old man who was sitting in one of the cars at the stop light. A third person also suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
Authorities did find a marijuana vape pen on Gutierrez and they noted how his eyes were “bloodshot and watery” but he was supposedly not under the influence at the time of the crash according to the district attorney.
The charges are elevated
All the evidence pointed to Gutierrez intentionally causing the crash and so the charges against the teen have since been elevated to two counts of open murder as well as attempted murder, and battery with a deadly weapon.
Gutierrez also has a history of driving-related offences as a month prior he was cited for driving 52 mph in a 35 mph zone, a month before that he ignored a stop sign and collided with an elderly woman, and back in April he threatened to shoot a cop.
Why Gutierrez may have intentionally crashed the car he was driving is unclear. For now he is being held without bail and his next expected court appearance will be for his arraignment which will be on January 6.
