A Las Vegas police officer is in critical condition and one other person has died following two separate shooting incidents in Las Vegas.

The incidents on Monday evening involving Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers came amid protests over the killing of George Floyd, the city's sheriff, Joe Lombardo, confirmed.

Mr Lambardo told a media briefing the first incident occurred while police were attempting to disperse a large crowd protesting in front of the Circus Circus hotel and casino.

A police officer was shot at the scene, and is now on life support at the University Medical Centre, Mr Lombardo added.

A suspect has been identified and taken into custody.

In the other incident, one person was shot by police after reaching for a firearm during an altercation near a federal building, Mr Lombardo said. The individual was later pronounced dead in hospital.

"What has occurred is utterly unacceptable, I hope the community sees it that way too," Mr Lombardo said.

He added: "With these protests, which are leading to riots, one tragedy is only leading to another."

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak meanwhile said his office had been "notified that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently working two separate incidents in Las Vegas".

"The State is in contact with local law enforcement and continues to monitor the situation," he added.

The developments came after four St Louis police officers were hit by gunfire late on Monday during violent protests over the death of Mr Floyd, a black man in police custody, hours after President Donald Trump vowed to use the US military to halt the spreading unrest.
