Las Vegas Aces’ Liz Cambage calls out Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller for making offensive remark about her weight

Las Vegas Aces star Liz Cambage took to Instagram Sunday evening, claiming Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller referenced her weight in an attempt to get a favorable call from officials in Sunday’s Sun-Aces game in Las Vegas.

In a video she posted on her Instagram story, Cambage said Miller pleaded with a referee by saying “c’mon, she’s 300 pounds.”

“If there’s one thing about me it’s that I will never let a man disrespect me, ever, ever, ever,” Cambage said. “Especially a little white one.”

Miller has since put out a statement through the Sun in which he admitted to saying “an inappropriate and offensive comment” and apologized.

“During last night’s game, while arguing a call with an official, I made an inappropriate and offensive comment in reference to Liz Cambage’s height and weight,” Miller said in a statement Monday morning. “I regret what I said in the heat of the moment and want to sincerely apologize to Liz and the entire Aces organization. I understand the gravity of my words and have learned from this.”

Cambage added Sunday that she’s “very proud of being a big [woman].” She is 6-8 and corrected Miller in the video, saying she’s 235 pounds.

“Don’t ever try to disrespect me or another woman in the league,” Cambage said. “I don’t know if that’s how coaches run, you try to disrespect women like that from the sidelines.”

“Stop trying to project your insecurities, baby, pick up the phone and call the psych[ologist].”

Cambage also tried to make a distinction between trash talking between players (Cambage herself has been previously accused of calling players “fat ass”) and coaches saying derogatory comments to players, likening it to “protected abuse.”

“We can’t do nothing back,” Cambage said. “It’s just crazy to me.”

Keri Laimbeer, who works in the Aces front office and is the daughter of Las Vegas head coach Bill Laimbeer, weighed in, too, directly tagging Miller in a tweet where she referred to him as a “bum” and called for him to get disciplined by the league.

The Courant reached out to the WNBA for comment but did not hear back in time for publication of this story.

The Aces and Sun will see each other on the court in just eight days when Connecticut hosts Las Vegas next Tuesday evening.
