Larry Munson’s personal favorite calls from the Georgia – Florida game

Larry Munson is as important to Georgia football as any player or coach in the 125+ year history of the program.

When you think of damn good dawgs, you think Munson, Herschel, Dooley, Trippi, Magill, Sinkwich, etc.

But no Bulldog has had the long-lasting impact of Munson, whose legendary calls are still engraved in the minds of the Georgia faithful.

Munson passed away in 2011. However, in 2009, he and Tony Barnhart co-authored Munson’s autobiography, “From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson.” In this book, which was an absolutely amazing read, Munson recalled his 10 favorite calls from his time as the voice of the Bulldogs.

Two of those calls came from the Georgia – Florida game, which was always one of Munson’s favorite games of the year.

Appleby to Washington: Nov. 8, 1975, Georgia 10, Florida 7:

This call was No. 3 on his career top-ten

“Washington caught it, thinking of Montreal and the Olympics, and ran out of his shoes right down the middle 80 yards! Gator Bowl rocking, stunned, the girders are bending now. Look at the score!” Munson said, as Richard Appleby hit Gene Washington for a game winning 80 yard touchdown on a reverse pass. Washington, a star track runner, would attempt to qualify for the 1976 Olympics.

Run Lindsay Run: Nov. 8, 1980, Georgia 26, Florida 21:

This call was No. 2 on his career top-ten

We all know this one. Georgia keeps its perfect season alive with a 92 yard game-winning touchdown from Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott. “Run, Lindsay!” Munson says, later adding, “Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott!” Munson continues with,”I broke my chair. I came right through a chair. A metal steel chair with about a 5-inch cushion. I broke it. The booth came apart. The stadium, well, the stadium fell down. Now they do have to renovate this thing. They’ll have to rebuild it now.”
