Larry Gogan's heartbreak after tragic death of beloved wife Florrie 18 years ago

Despite the sadness felt by the passing of Larry Gogan, the radio legend will be reunited with his beloved wife Florrie whose death left him heartbroken 18 years ago.

Parents of five children together, the pair were dubbed childhood sweethearts when Larry fell head over heels in love when she was just 15.

Having first laid his eyes on Florrie while she worked at her father’s newsagents Larry said “she was a very nice looking blonde.”

Florrie began to work at Larry’s mother’s shop in Fairview, Dublin and said it was “love at first sight” for for him.

He proposed and married Florrie when she was 21 and the pair spent 39 years of marriage together.

Florrie remained Larry’s “rock” and number one fan tuning into his radio show every day until she died from breast cancer in January, 2002 aged just 60.

The pair spent their final Christmas together in a Dublin hospital before Florrie took a sudden turn and died within six months of having treatment.

Larry previously said he felt he had been “robbed” of not getting the chance to say a proper goodbye to his darling wife.

Just last year in an interview with RTE, Larry said he spoke to his wife every day since her death and never felt lonely.

He said: “Her loss was horrific for me really because she did everything to do with the family, the house and everything like that.

“We never fought we always got on very well together. She was great craic, great fun.

“And I didn’t really think I’d live without her..and it’s as if it [her death] happened yesterday.

“I still talk to her every day, people think that’s crazy but I find myself chatting to her.

“I still find her presence around the place. It was a horrible blow for me when she died.

“I do of course miss her I miss her every day but I’ve never been lonely because I always feel like she’s here.

“She’s always beside me at all times.”

Right up until his death, Marty Whelan said on Tuesday that Larry would speak fondly of Florrie at every given chance and the pair were a “rock solid couple.”

Larry is survived by his five children - Gerard, Orla, Grainne, David and Sinead - and 12 grandchildren.
