Larry Fitzgerald would definitely retire if the Cardinals win the Super Bowl this year

Every year when the season begins, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald gets asked if it will be his last of his playing career. He always says he doesn’t know.

However, one thing could happen that would definitely make him decide to retire. The Cardinals could win the Super Bowl. He “absolutely” would retire.

“That would definitely validate me,” Fitzgerald told reporters on Thursday after practice. “You wouldn’t see me around here anymore if that happened.”

And while the reporter who asked the question said he didn’t believe him, perhaps referring to the fact that with two productive seasons, he could pass Jerry Rice as the No. 1 receiver in NFL history, Fitzgerald was certain.

“I’ve got some other things up my sleeve,” Fitzgerald said. “I’ve got some other things on the agenda.”

If there is one thing Fitzgerald has said consistently over the years, it is that the one thing he is chasing in his career is a championship.

“I just want to win a championship,” he said. “I want to compete for a division title. Those are the things that are important to me.”

Passing Rice would be nothing more than “an interesting footnote,” he said, although his numbers do matter to him. What he really envies about Rice’s career are his three Super Bowl wins.

The Cardinals are definitely not among the favorites this year to win it all, but if somehow they were to go on a run and finish it off with a title, Fitzgerald would gladly ride off into the sunset.
