Larry Fitzgerald, A.Q. Shipley among Cardinals’ 2019 team captains

The Arizona Cardinals announced their 2019 team captains. None will come as a surprise. They have two on offense, two on defense and two on special teams.

On offense, the players voted for receiver Larry Fitzgerald and center A.Q. Shipley. On defense, it was defensive lineman Corey Peters and linebacker Chandler Jones. For special teams, punter Andy Lee got the vote.

All are deserving leaders. And with Shipley being named captain, it is clear why he is the starting center. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury waited to make a decision because he felt both Shipley and Mason Cole were capable starters. However, Shipley is clearly a respected leader in the locker room. Making him the starter is the right move in the eyes of his teammates.

Fitzgerald, Peters and Jones were all captains in 2018.

Patrick Peterson, who cannot have contact with the team until his six-game suspension is over, was understandably not voted a team captain this year. He is still a well-respected leader in the locker room and has been a big help to the coaching staff, but he will not get to wear the captain’s “C” on his uniform.
