If you have any familiarity with Curb Your Enthusiasm, you’ll be well aware that its creator and star Larry David isn’t much of a people person and any sort of public event can be a chore.
That’s why David, who is also the co-creator of Seinfeld, wasn’t too disappointed when he had to be uninvited from former president Barack Obama’s extravagant 60th birthday party.
The bash went down last weekend at Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts with many famous faces in attendance, including Beyonce, Jay-Z, Tom Hanks, Steven Speilberg, Bruce Springsteen, Bradley Cooper, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.
There were set to be many more people there at the event but the Obamas had to scale things back due to concerns of the spread of Covid-19 amongst large crowds. One person who was cut from the list was 74-year-old David, but he wasn’t disappointed in the slightest as he feared he was going to be asked to do a stand-up routine with only three days’ notice.
In a New York Times column by Maureen Dowd, David is quoted as saying: “I was pretty glum when I finally called back his assistant.
“When he told me I was eighty-sixed from the party, I was so relieved I screamed, ‘Thank you! Thank you!’ He must have thought I was insane.
“Then I hung up the phone, poured myself a drink and finished my crossword puzzle.”
Needless to say, this is a very Larry David-like reaction to being uninvited to the biggest celebrity party of the year and that’s why people love him.

Other notable names who were cut from the party guest list were said to include Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien and David Letterman.
Obama had been criticised by some in the US media for going ahead with the party especially with the delta variant rapidly spreading throughout the United States.
In a statement obtained by Fox News, Hannah Hankins, spokesperson for the Obamas, said: “Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends. President Obama is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”
