Larry Bird receives standing ovation in Game 1 between Celtics-Pacers

In the third quarter of Sunday’s postseason matchup between the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers (a home game for Boston), Celtics and Pacers fans paid their respects to Hall of Famer Larry Bird, giving the former forward a standing ovation and serenading him with chants of “Larry” when he was shown on the Jumbotron.

Bird, the “Hick from French Lick” was one of the most dominant players of his era, routinely leading the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals where he would win three times and win three consecutive NBA MVP awards. A walking triple-double with terrific skill, Larry Legend is regarded as one of the two greatest players in franchise history (along with 11-time NBA champion Bill Russell).

Pacers fans have a was onto chant for Bird as well.

An Indiana native, Bird spent three seasons as the Pacers head coach (1997-2000) and nine seasons as President of Basketball Operations (2003-2012), winning the NBA’s Coach of the Year award in 1998 and Executive of the Year award in 2012. He’s the only individual to have the distinguishment of winning an NBA MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year award.

A testament to his prodigious basketball knowledge.
