A Northern Ireland grammar school is cutting class times and losing a staff member due to cutbacks, parents have been warned.
Larne Grammar will reduce class time by 20 minutes a day and has told families a retiring vice principal will not be replaced as “we simply could not afford to appoint a replacement”.
The school says they are restructuring their ‘senior leadership’ positions due to “ongoing cuts to the school’s budget”. The letter adds that “we have cut our teaching staff complement by a further 1.4 full-time equivalent”.
The principal’s letter goes on to say: “A consequence of that reduction is that, from September, teaching staff levels will no longer be sufficient to enable the school to operate in its current structure.
"Following considerations of the various options, and in an attempt to protect learning and teaching as far as possible and minimise the impact on pupils and the wider school community, the school day will be reorganised with a twenty-minute reduction in class time.”
The move comes amid a warning from teaching unions about continuing pressure on budgets.
