Larne chief Kenny Bruce questions Irish FA on funding support

Larne chief Kenny Bruce is the latest high-profile figure to question the Irish FA on its response to the coronavirus crisis.

Irish League clubs are growing increasingly concerned about the financial pressures being placed on them by the ongoing suspension of football in Northern Ireland.

With no games taking place and no regular revenue coming through the turnstiles, clubs feel the IFA should be doing more to help.

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern and Crusaders treasurer Tommy Whiteside have already made calls for the IFA to release funds distributed to the association by UEFA through the Hat Trick programme.

UEFA announced last month that it had brought forward over €200 million "to help its 55 member associations meet the challenges of Covid-19 in their respective countries."

The funding - which is worth approximately €4.3m to the IFA - is usually spread over three payments during the course of a season.

Normally it is used to cover the IFA's running costs and support different parts of the domestic game here, but UEFA is permitting its member associations to set their own priorities with the cash advancement due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The IFA has stressed that the Hat Trick funding is not 'new' money.

It is also understood the Association had already budgeted for the funding prior to the coronavirus pandemic forcing football into lockdown.

In response to comments made by a number of Irish League officials, the Association said in a statement: "These are funds which have already been allocated to the organisation by UEFA pre the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic."

Responding to a newspaper story on the issue, Larne chief Bruce tweeted on Tuesday: "Football is about people, community and being united especially in times of hardship. If this report is true then it’s clear the local game is not held in high regard by the @OfficialIrishFA which in my view will backfire on them. The local game is essential for the IFA."

At the weekend, Linfield chief McGivern tweeted: "Why are more not calling for @OfficialIrishFA to redistribute some of the €4.3m @UEFA Hat Trick money to keep local football afloat? This was meant to be used 'to help its 55 member associations meet the challenges of COVID-19 in their respective countries'."

Crues official Whiteside added: "It doesn't look as if the IFA are going to part with UEFA money because they think it's their own."

The Irish FA has already distributed £16,000 to each Irish League club amid the coronavirus crisis, while there has also been an advance of NI Football League prize money to ease some of the pressure.
