Larkhall youth had knife when he confronted social workers at their office

A Larkhall youth was carrying a knife when he confronted social workers about a court order.

Grant Gibb picked up a card-reading machine and told a member of staff: “If you were a guy I would hit you with that.”

Gibb, 19 was given a 13-month custodial sentence at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour in the social work office in Brandon Gate, Hamilton, on January 14.

Gibb also admitted similar conduct when police went to arrest him at his home in West Clyde Street later the same day.

Louise Beattie, prosecuting, said Gibb turned up at the social work office with his brother. He was agitated and under the influence.

Ms Beattie told the court: “He said he wanted to sue social work and asked a member of staff if he was going to be ‘breached’ over a court order.

“Another social worker attended and it was seen that Gibb had a knife concealed n the pocket of his jumper.

“The handle and the bottom of the blade were visible.

“Staff tried to calm Gibb down and eventually he left.

“The police were called and officers went to his address later. He shouted abuse and threats, warning one officer he would ‘put a bullet in your head’.

“While being taken to Lanark police station he was spitting and a spit hood had to be applied.”

The court heard Gibb had been placed on a three-year community payback order in 2017 after he admitted attempting to break into two houses.

Defence agent Ian Scott explained: “Unfortunately he found himself in and out of custody during the course of the CPO.

“He went to the social work office to express his concern about people he felt were mismanaging the order.

“He suffers from a number of conditions, including paranoia, and was carrying a knife.

“He was also under the influence of drugs.”

Sheriff Douglas Brown told Gibb: “It’s not a favourable criminal justice social work report.

“They seem to think – with good reason – you do not comply with community-based disposals and have a very poor attitude towards the current one.”
