Larkhall Thistle pull out of West Of Scotland League amid Covid chaos

Larkhall Thistle are the latest club to pull out of the West Of Scotland League, ahead of the November 14 deadline.

The Gasworks Park club made the decision late on Wednesday night, just days before they were due to host Thorniewood United in Conference C.

West Of Scotland League bosses have given clubs until November 14 to decide if they will continue with this season due to issues with coronavirus, with permission to pull out without fear of sanctions.

Thistle's decision leaves that league with 10 teams, and in a social media post they said the health risks were too great as they look to preserve their 142-year heritage.

The club said they were facing a 12-point deduction at the start of the 2021-22 season had they continued with the season but then chose to pull out, and would forfeit a 'good behaviour bond' which they paid when the league was formed.

Their statement read: 'After much soul searching and deliberation by the club committee we have decided to take advantage of the November 14 final deadline to withdraw from the West Of Scotland Football League for the remainder of the 20/21 season.

'Many challenges as regards continuing were discussed, but paramount in everyone's thinking was the health and safety of  our coaching staff, players, committee and their families as coronavirus continues to spread and cause concern for us all.

'Unanimously, we agreed that the health risks associated with us continuing to play were too great as are the sanctions which would be imposed by the WOSFL should we be forced to withdraw after the deadline.

"The club would like to thank the coaching staff and players for their efforts and commitment, both in terms of their work ethic at training and games, and their voluntary decision to play without any monies.

'Like many other clubs we will now set our sights on returning to action in season 21/22.

'Many people have taken out club memberships to date and we thank them most sincerely with these monies now going towards their season ticket for what we all hope will be a normal season 21/22.

'This old club has been in existence for over 142 years and this was very much in our thoughts when we made this decision.'
