Larkhall teaching assistant learns new skill to make much needed protective face masks

A Larkhall teaching assistant has learned a brand new skill in lockdown - how to make much needed protective face masks .

Claire Clarkson had only ever used a sewing machine once before, but decided to give it a go following online instructions and has now made over 245 masks.

And her efforts have been snapped up by Lanarkshire’s keyworkers including paramedics, nurses, home carers, health visitors, district nurses, lorry drivers and more.

She’s even had Hamilton company, Body Piercing by Jo take some off her hands for a £5 donation to Action Against Stalking.

Claire, who works in Larkhall’s Machanhill Primary School, said: “ Last week I started to look into some research about face masks and came across a design the American health board are using that the public are helping to make so on Sunday I decided I’d give it a go.

“I’m far from professional, in fact that was only the second time I had ever used a sewing machine. But I managed to make a mask and I was really pleased with the outcome so I decided I would make a few up for my local healthcare/keyworkers.

“So far I’ve made over 200 and still going strong!

“Some of the keyworkers, or in my eyes hero’s, who have safely come to collect them include paramedics, nurses, health visitors, district nurses, care workers, lorry drivers and many more. I’ve also made a few up for the general public who are at high risk and or vulnerable.”

The design 26-year-old Claire follows also has a pocket inside for people to add a filter for added protection.

Claire added: “My local community have been so supportive and I’ve been blown away by everyone’s response and kindness, it’s so overwhelming.

“And I had Body Piercing by Jo take some away to raise money for Action Against Stalking, a very worthwhile Scottish charity.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me in this little lockdown project of mine. I’ve just been enjoying doing my bit for others at this crucial time and I would encourage who enjoys sewing to give it a try.”
