Larkhall Specsavers raise over £1200 for the Anne Rowling Neurology Clinic

A Larkhall opticians raised more than £1200 throughout the year through a series of events, to raise money for the Anne Rowling Neurology Clinic.

Through their efforts –which included fancy dress parties and a sponsored team bike ride around the Scottish isle of Cumbrae – the business, which is based on Larkhall’s Union Street, has managed to raise a substantial amount for the charity as well as raise awareness about the work it carries out.

All of the proceeds raised throughout 2019 will go the clinic, which delivers research and trials for people with neuro-degenerative diseases, as well as hosting specialist clinics for these conditions.

This is a cause close to the heart of store manager Louise Donnelly, as her brother Martin was diagnosed with the disease following a regular sight test, which led to him losing sight in one eye as a result.

As well as raising money, the group hope they have raised awareness about the condition and the importance of eye tests.

On his own experiences, Martin said: ‘It’s easy to dismiss an eye test as something that you may not need, but it’s hugely important that people ensure they visit at least every two years to make sure everything is okay.

“It’s easy to take sight for granted, but you really don’t know what you have until something more serious happens.”

Store director Jill Keenan, said: “We always set time aside to raise money for causes that are important to us and hearing Louise and Martin’s story, we really wanted to try and make a difference where we could. Every penny raised for the Anne Rowling Neurology Clinic will help support people with the condition, as well as help to fund specialist clinics which are available for anyone affected by neuro-degenerative diseases.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped us to organise all of our events this year and everyone who very kindly and generously helped us to reach our fundraising goals.”
