Larkhall's Lighthouse community facility given 10-year lease

The future of Larkhall’s Lighthouse looks a little brighter after councillors agreed to a 10-year lease.

Run by the Larkhall Christians Together Trust, the popular community facility provides residents with information on local services and a meeting space as well as keeping the public toilets open.

A business plan submitted by the trust aims to see operating costs for the facility covered in four years.

From August, the new concessionary lease will kick in at a cost of £1 a year and it will allow the trust to apply from grant funding to support the business plan.

South Lanarkshire Council’s housing and technical resources committee agreed to the new lease on Wednesday, February 5 and the move has since been welcomed by Larkhall councillor Jackie Burns.

Cllr Burns said: “The Lighthouse, since its inception, has proved a great success and the committee have worked tirelessly to promote the facility as a meeting place and a source of getting local information about a wide range of activities.

“I hope that residents of Larkhall will continue to use the facility and I welcome the partnerships between local volunteers and South Lanarkshire Council.”

In March 2017, the executive committee agreed to the original one-year lease before granting a two-year extension in June 2018.

During its first full year of operation, the facility was run by 20 volunteers and visited over 6000 times by members of the public.
