Largest increase of UK coronavirus deaths as more patients in Nottinghamshire test positive

The most recent figures of coronavirus deaths from the Government has shown the darkest day for the country so far.

The details have emerged as the Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains in intensive care due to his symptoms of Covid-19 worsening.

As of 5pm on Monday, April 6 the coronavirus death toll for the UK has reached 6,159 - an increase of 786 in the past 24 hours.

The news marks the worst recording for UK deaths in the pandemic so far.

Public Health England confirmed Nottinghamshire now has 469 confirmed cases of the virus - a rise of 44 new cases from 425 the previous day.

In Nottingham, the figure remains at 204 cases with no new cases confirmed.

The Department for Health tweeted: "As of 9am 7 April, 266,694 tests have concluded, with 14,006 tests on 6 April.

"213,181 people have been tested of which 55,242 tested positive.

"As of 5pm on 6 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 6,159 have sadly died."

Speaking from Downing Street at the daly press conference, the foreign secretary Dominic Raab, who is standing in for the Prime Minister said Mr Johnson was "receiving the very best care".

No further updates on his condition are expected until Wednesday.
