Large tides, challenging surf conditions temporarily close Newcastle ocean baths

Challenging surf conditions and large tides have forced the closure of Newcastle ocean baths for the remainder of the week.

Newcastle City Council made the announcement on their website on Wednesday, stating that the conditions were unsafe for council staff to access the water channel between the baths and the ocean.

"There is currently a large amount of sediment which washed up from last Wednesday's large storm event, which means the baths cannot be refilled nor pumps operate effectively," the statement said.

"With current forecasts not predicting favourable conditions until early next week, the baths will remain closed until it is safe for the work to be completed."

Council advised that Merewether ocean baths would not be cleaned until Thursday so the public could enjoy a swim during the Newcastle closure.

Lifeguards will be on duty throughout the closure to notify swimmers of the closure and there will be signs in place as well.
