Large-scale rescue operation after kayakers were blown along Firth of Forth by strong winds

A large-scale rescue operation was carried out after three kayakers found themselves blown along the Firth of Forth in strong winds on Thursday afternoon.

South Queensferry Coastguard teams rushed to the scene of the incident, just off the coast of Port Seton, along with Fisherrow Coastguard, North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team, RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Emergency services were contacted at around 1pm on Thursday (20 February) after the kayakers encountered difficulty in the water.

Those with South Queensferry Coastguard said that when they arrived "it became apparent that the group was being blown eastwards towards the rocky foreshore by the sudden onset of strong winds".

Four rescue officers were able to wade into the water to pull the kayaks to safety and pass the casualties, described as being "cold and exhausted", on to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

South Queensferry Coastguard posted on social media: "Once we knew the kayakers were fine we were able to warm the lifeboat crew before they faced up to 40 knots of windy sleet squalls for their journey back to station."

Fisherrow Coastguard, who were also involved in the rescue operation, posted: "A great team effort by all services especially in the prevailing weather and sea conditions."
