Large-scale emergency services response as secondary school evacuated following suspected gas leak

A secondary school in Oldham was evacuated due to a suspected gas leak.

There was a large-scale emergency services response following the incident at Waterhead Academy in Lees on Friday afternoon.

Pictures from the scene show several fire engines and ambulances in the school car park off Huddersfield Road.

A spokesperson for the school said no-one had been injured.

Roz Batley, operations director at South Pennines Academies, which runs the school, said: "I can confirm Waterhead Academy has evacuated.

"There has been some kind of leak, although we're not sure exactly what it is yet.

"The children have been taken to safe areas in the school.

The school was evacuated this afternoon (KBP)

"Everybody is safe and the emergency services are on the scene."

A spokesperson for Oldham council said: "We are aware of the gas leak at Waterhead School – the fire service are currently on site to make sure the school is safe.

"There have been no casualties

"All pupils from the school have been sent home."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 1.10pm on Friday, November 12, six fire engines from Whitefield, Oldham, Chadderton, Hollins, Phillips Park and Manchester Central attended an incident at Waterhead Academy on Huddersfield Road, Oldham.

"Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside other emergency services to establish a safety cordon, and made the building safe. Several people were assessed at the scene by colleagues from NWAS.

"Fire crews were on the scene for approximately three hours."
