Large police presence spotted escorting vehicles through Edinburgh City Centre

A large police presence was spotted earlier tonight escorting a number of vehicles with blacked out windows and coaches through Edinburgh City Centre.

The group of vehicles were spotted coming down South College Street just off North Bridge in the Old Town. One police vehicle blocked traffic coming down from Nicholson Street, allowing the vehicles to turn onto North Bridge.

Police on motorcycles also blocked the pavement to prevent members of the public from crossing the road and getting close to the vehicles while they passed.

With COP26 ongoing in Glasgow and Barack Obama staying in the capital, many locals wondered who could be in the vehicles requiring such a large police presence.

The video shows the three black cars with tinted windows passing through the busy city centre street next to the University of Edinburgh's Old College followed by two white cars, a coach and minibus.

Ben Shaw who spotted the vehicles said: "There was around 30-40 police officers and numerous university security all around the building.

"The event seemed to take place in the Playfair library and from the outside view it was lit up with blue and red lights inside.

"There was around 50 people inside, some with American accent who all left at around 7pm. One woman left last after shaking hands with a man at the door to the building for a photo opportunity.

"The man could possibly be Peter Mathieson. She then left the building through the back entrance at the Talbot Rice Gallery surrounded by non uniform security with earpieces.

"Then they got into the greyish range rover and drove away.

"The whole road outside the front of old college was shut by police on motorbikes for 5 minutes before any cars came. The police when asked refused to comment who it was. "

Police Scotland have been contacted for more information.
