A large bolide, or fireball, appeared in the night sky in the Kanto region on Friday. Many residents posted about the sighting on social media, reporting that it was moving and giving off a bright light.
Daichi Fujii, 34, a curator in charge of astronomy at the Hiratsuka City Museum in Kanagawa Prefecture, took pictures with a camera installed at his home in Hiratsuka.
A glowing white sphere was traveling from west to east in the southern sky at about 10:30 p.m., according to Fujii.
Previously, a bolide was spotted before dawn on July 2 in the Kanto region, and a meteorite was later found in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture.
This new bolide is as bright as the previous one and is comparable to the luminosity of a full moon, according to Fujii.
By analyzing its trajectory, Fujii estimated that it may have fallen into the Pacific Ocean or the Boso Peninsula.
