Large lorries banned from Sandymount's Strand Road

Large lorries are now banned from using Sandymount's Strand Road.

Heavy goods vehicles with five axles or more were previously banned from using the road between 7am and 7pm.

But that restriction has now been extended to a 24/7 ban, with the Council doubling down on restricting access to Dublin Port for HGVs to the Port Tunnel only.

HGVs making deliveries to the area can apply for a permit to use the road.

Dublin City Council told Dublin Live that the plans should greatly reduce the number of large vehicles using the road.

They said: "5+axle HGVs have been banned from using Strand Road since February 2007 07:00-19:00 seven days a week.

"This is in line with the HGV strategy which the elected members voted for in 2006.

"The times of operation of the ban on Strand Road are now being changed to 24 hours in order to reduce the numbers of large trucks using this road.

"The HGV strategy always set out that the entry and exit route for large trucks to and from Dublin Port was only via the Dublin Port Tunnel.

"A permit scheme is in place for vehicles who need to deliver within the cordon."
