
Big chestnuts measuring 35 millimeters or more in diameter are ripe for the picking -- or pricking -- in Hidaka, Saitama Prefecture. Known collectively as "Komagawa Marron" after a river in the area, the four varietals of chestnuts will be harvested through early October. The cooler temperatures this summer have made this year's crop particularly sweet, according to an official at the local Irumano branch of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives. The chestnuts will be available for purchase on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends at the JA Irumano Koma branch store.
