Large hole opens up in ground near Hamilton's most historic landmark

A large hole has appeared near to Hamilton’s most historic landmark.

It was noticed by passers-by yesterday at the Palace Grounds, close to Hamilton Mausoleum and the town’s driving range.

The unusual hole has now been cordoned off.

A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. They can vary in size and can appear suddenly.

One resident who spotted the hole said on social media: “Just be careful your dogs don’t go over to it. It’s just at the road where the golf range is on the grass verge.

Alistair McKinnon, head of facilities waste and grounds services at South Lanarkshire Council, said; “We are aware of this issue and in the interests of public safety temporary fencing has been installed. We are investigating the cause of the collapse.”
