Large grass fire started 'deliberately' in Bristol park

A fire that broke out at a Bristol park today (Wednesday, June 16) is thought to have been started deliberately, Avon Fire and Rescue Service have said.

The blaze took hold of the shrubbery behind Hengrove Leisure Centre around 2pm today and two fire engines were called to the scene.

Fire crews from Bedminster tackled the flames with high-pressure hoses and beaters, finally extinguishing it just before 3.30pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said they believed the cause of the blaze to be "deliberate ignition".

This information has been passed on to Avon and Somerset Police, he added.

A video taken by a member of the public showed the height of the flames as they scorched the foliage at the edge of the park, quickly spreading through the dry grass after weeks without rain.

He captured his videos of the blaze around 2.45pm, when it was still roaring through the undergrowth.
