Large grass fire rages near homes in Rhondda as it 'covers whole mountain'

Dramatic images have captured a grass fire raging close to homes in Rhondda.

Residents in Ystrad have been urged to keep their windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area. Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene above Sandybank Road in the village. Large flames can be seen on the mountainside close to a number of homes nearby.

It is the latest of several grass fires to occur across Wales in recent weeks.

Sarah Evans, who lives in Ystrad, said that within the last hour the fire had grown "10 times" in size.

The 29-year-old said: "The first five or 10 minutes it was just a little fire but it has covered the whole of the mountain. My sister was driving around Treherbert and she was saying how quickly it had got out of control.

"She said that it's eerie up there as everything has turned black. I first saw the fire at around 8pm and from then to now it's about 10 times the size it was, if not more."

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue service said: "We received a call at 6.53pm on Monday night. We have sent five crews to the scene as well as specialist officers. We are advising residents to keep their windows and doors closed as there is a lot of smoke in the area."

A tweet from the fire service added: "Crews are in attendance at a grass fire above Sandybank Road, Ystrad. Please can residents in the surrounding areas keep windows and closed due to the amount of smoke in the area."

It is the latest in a number of grass fires to occur across Wales in recent weeks, including one in Wattsville, near Newport, where emergency services spent over seven hours battling the blaze last week.
