Large fire rips through Alicante Airport as flights are delayed at popular holiday spot

A large fire has broken out at Alicante Airport in southeastern Spain.

The blaze is understood to have broken out near the departures area and buildings have been evacuated in the popular holiday spot.

The fire broke out around 1.30pm local time and no injuries are being reported.

A spokesman for Spanish airport operator AENA said two planes had been diverted to nearby airports in Valencia and Murcia.

The popular hub is serviced by Prestwick Airport.

A spokesman said at 3.45pm local time: “The fire at Alicante-Elche Airport is under control.”

An hour earlier AENA said: “For security reasons the airport is being evacuated. At this moment in time it is not admitting any air traffic.”

As of 3pm Spanish website Diarioinformacion reported firefighters had extinguished the blaze.

AENA claims departing traffic is now back to normal at the airport.

But arriving planes will still not be allowed to land for sometime.

Hundreds of holidaymakers and staff are thought to have been evacuated after the blaze broke out, although an AENA official was unable to give an exact number.
