Large fire near George Street Bridge in Newport as smoke billows across city centre

Emergency services were called to a "deliberate" fire underneath a busy road bridge on Monday afternoon which caused thick black smoke to billow across the city centre in Newport.

Fire crews were sent to extinguish a fire which is believed to have been started deliberately near Pill, under George Street Bridge at around 4.30pm.

It took just 30 minutes for the fire service to put out the flames.

Officers from Gwent Police also attended the scene but left after half-an-hour once the fire was out. A burnt-out vehicle remains at the scene.

Pictures from the scene in the immediate aftermath show what looks like the burnt out remains of a caravan between the large concrete pillars which support George Street Bridge/B4237 which spans the River Usk.
