Large fire in Margam sees major road shut and residents told to shut doors and windows

Fire crews are tackling a large ongoing fire involving several agricultural buildings, with residents being asked to avoid the area. Ten fire crews are dealing with the fire in Margam which is said to be generating a large volume of smoke.

Around 10 fire engines from Kenfig Hill, Bridgend and Swansea were sent to the scene, but it has since been reduced to three. The fire service said access along the A48 has been restricted and motorists were advised to select alternative routes to avoid any further congestion.

A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "At approximately 1:22am on Tuesday August 16 we received reports of a fire in the open in Margam, Neath Port Talbot. Multiple crews and approximately 10 appliances are in attendance, Crews are working alongside multi-agency partners to bring the fire under control. The incident is currently on going."

A statement from South Wales Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook at approximately 4.42am this morning (August 16) said: "Fire crews from Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub CGC / MAWW Fire and Rescue and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are dealing with an incident in #Margam along with multi-agency partners.

"Approximately 10 fire appliances have been committed to dealing with a fire in the open, which is generating a large volume of smoke. Residents are requested to avoid the area and close all windows and doors as a precautionary measure. Access along the #A48 has been restricted and motorists are advised to select alternative routes to avoid any further congestion. The incident is currently ongoing and your co-operation would be greatly appreciated."
