Large entertainment events across South Lanarkshire set to be cancelled or postponed amid coronavirus crisis

Entertainment events throughout South Lanarkshire are in the process of being cancelled or postponed.

Concerts, gigs and shows due to be shown at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture venues will be postponed or axed if more than 500 people are due to gather.

David Booth, general manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, said: “We are in the process of cancelling or postponing any event which could result in more than 500 people gathering, in line with the latest government guidance.”

The Scottish Government last week stated: “To protect the capacity of our public services, the Scottish Government advises that organisers should cancel or postpone all mass events of 500 people or more – indoors or outdoors.

“This approach should be maintained until such time as further advice is issued.”

The First Minister announced on March 12, that, from March 16, mass events should not take place, in light of their potential impact on public services.

Under current powers the Scottish Government is only able to provide advice, and cannot instruct organisers to cancel events.

However, we hope that organisers will follow this advice, to support our public services in responding to COVID-19.

It may be that in future instructions are issued for events to be cancelled.
