Large crowds march through Blanchardstown shopping centre in protest of death of George Nkencho

Groups of protestors could be seen marching through a busy Irish shopping centre on Thursday in the wake of the death of George Nkencho

Crowds could be seen marching through Blanchardstown shopping centre in Dublin holding protest signs as shoppers and staff looked on.

Another demonstration was also held outside Blanchardstown Garda station as people called for justice following Nkencho's death.

The protests come following the death of 27-year-old George Nkencho who was shot by Gardai following a standoff in Manorfields Drive in Clonee this week.

Footage of the tragic incident has been circulating across social media over the past two days.

Gardai had earlier responded to reports of a man wielding a knife at a nearby Spar supermarket and post office in Hartstown, where a shop worker is believed to have suffered a broken nose.

Unarmed Gardai raced to the scene where the suspect threatened the public and officers before at least 12 gave chase.

Armed Gardai too were threatened with the knife and tried non-lethal force to subdue the man, including a taser and pepper spray - but to no avail.

Gardai repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife before using force.

Sources say up to five shots were fired at the man, hitting him at least three times.

On Thursday George’s sister Gloria pleaded with the public not to share footage of the shooting online.

In a statement, she wrote: “Thank you all for your condolences and prayers. My siblings and I have witnessed the most traumatic experience of our lives as our brother was shot in front of us.

“George was suffering from serious mental illness and those who knew him know the type of person he was. He was not a thug nor a criminal.

“My family greatly appreciate everything everyone is doing.

“I kindly ask to refrain from sharing the video of the shooting. It is not something I wish to be reminded of.”
