Large crowd attacks police car in Liverpool after last orders before lockdown

Crowds gathered in Liverpool city centre on Tuesday night as pubs closed for the final time before new lockdown measures came in at midnight.

Videos showed groups of people leaving bars and pubs at 10pm. They showed people singing and dancing in the street before being dispersed by police.

One video, taken from a flat above the party area and sent to the Liverpool Echo, showed dozens of people blocking the streets as a police car attempted to move through them.

The person who took the footage said it was "one of the most horrible sights that I’ve witnessed".

The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "A large group of young party-goers who were defying every single social distancing rule imaginable attacked a police car on Concert Square.

"This event had a particularly big impact on me because it made clear that this second lockdown that Liverpool will find itself in from tomorrow will have the potential to unleash a very dangerous wave of riots and uprising of people that don’t believe in coronavirus restrictions. This video might just be the start."

In other footage people can be seen hugging each other and jumping around as police officers move them on from the area.

Another picture of the crowds, posted to the Snapchat Map was captioned “Herd immunity here we come”.

Liverpool has been placed into the most restrictive Tier Three category in England. It applies where transmission rates are rising most rapidly and the NHS could soon be under "unbearable presure". The baseline rules here prohibit social mixing indoors, private gardens and the closure of pubs and bars. People are also advised against travel in and out of the areas. You can read more about these rules here.

Welsh Government health minister said on Wednesday morning he is 'talking with lawyers' about banning people from Covid-hotspots travelling to Wales.
