Large chemical incident declared in Essex as residents told to lock themselves in homes

Locals have been told to stay indoors and a chemical incident has been declared after 'clouds of fumes' reportedly billowed over Essex.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service crews rushed to West Thurruck today following a reaction involving an industrial canister.

Several roads have been closed while fire crews in haz-mat suits investigate.

People living nearby have been told to keep their windows and doors shut.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We are currently at the scene of a chemical incident in West Thurrock.

Emergency service personnel gather at the industrial park (Essex Fire and Rescue Service)

“Control operators received reports of a cloud of fumes this afternoon following a reaction involving an industrial cylinder.

“Emergency services are working together at the scene. Firefighters are using a hazardous materials unit as part of work to establish the chemicals involved.”

The incident has caused local bus services to be delayed.

A second fire service statement at 8.15pm read: "Six fire engines will be arriving at 8.30pm to take over from the crews who initially attended.

"A 100 metre exclusion zone remains in place at the scene."

If you live nearby, please ensure that you remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

The industrial park, which sits on The Thames, is home to a number of businesses, including Industrial Chemical Group Ltd and Proctor & Gamble.

Back in 2013 an explosion took place on the grounds of the former business, leaving two people with minor injuries.

An Industrial Chemical Group spokesperson would not comment on the situation today but said that a statement would be issued later on.
