Large 6.4m earthquake rocks California and Nevada with homes left shaking

Homes have been left shaking after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Nevada in the early hours of this morning.

The tremor hit 57km north-west of Tonopah in Nevada shortly after 3am local time.

The impact of the quake was felt in neighbouring state California as well, where homes were left shaking.

The geological survey said the depth of the earthquake was 7.6 km.

Videos shared online showed the power of the natural phenomenon, with light fittings rocking back and forward as the ground moves beneath people's homes.

One woman wrote on Twitter: "I felt #earthquake about 35 minutes ago from my home south of Sacramento.

"A few minutes later reports of 6.2 magnitude near Tonopah, Nevada. I hope everyone is ok!"

One man described the peculiar sensation of the tremors moving his bed.

"Just got done finishing riding the shockwaves of an earthquake that took place minutes ago in Nevada," he posted.

"For about 30-45 seconds it felt like two people on both sides of the bed started to rock it back and forth.

"I looked at my closet area and noticed my hangers swaying!"

Another man was woken by his wobbling home believing that wild boars had caused the shaking.

"I felt something a bit ago in Northern California, woke me up, thought it was the wild boars again but, couldn't find anything from them," he wrote.

An average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.0 and 7.0 occur per year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.

One person in Fallon, Nevada - 100 miles from the epicentre - said they had to "hold on to my bed to stay on that ride" due to the strength of the tremors.

Another person a full 220 miles away in Walnut Creek, California said the chimes in their grandfather clock rocked back and forward rather than side to side.
