LAPD rookie investigated by Culver City police 'no longer one of my officers,' chief says

Nov. 03--Culver City police detectives are expected to present prosecutors with their investigation of a now-former LAPD officer whose gun was found in the hallway of an apartment complex, a department spokesman said Tuesday.

Culver City police Lt. Sam Agaiby declined to discuss the details of the case but said detectives expected to hand it over to the district attorney's office "in a few days." Prosecutors will then decide whether to charge the former officer with any crimes.

Agaiby said no arrests have been made.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Tuesday that the rookie officer under investigation was "no longer one of my officers." Beck declined to say whether he fired the officer or whether the officer resigned.

The investigation began in the early morning of Oct. 25, when someone in a Culver City apartment complex found a gun in the hallway, a bullet lodged in a nearby wall. Investigators responded to the Canturbury Drive building, collected the weapon and ran it through databases in hopes of finding its owner.

The gun, they learned, was registered to the rookie Los Angeles police officer.

Detectives began investigating who had fired the gun and why. On Tuesday, Agaiby said only that the investigation was "coming to an end."

The LAPD launched its own internal affairs investigation into the officer, who police said was off-duty at the time of the incident. His name has not been released by authorities.
