Laois brothers who drowned in diving tragedy to be laid to rest together in joint funeral service

Two brothers who drowned in a diving tragedy will be laid to rest together on Thursday.

Fergus Brophy, 42, and his brother Philip, 34, from Co Laois died when they went diving together at a 40-metre deep water hole in Tipperary on Sunday morning.

Earlier this week emotional tributes were paid to the two brothers after the "devastating loss".

Innisfails Gaa Club wrote on Facebook: "We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Paddy Brophy and his family on the recent passing of his brothers Fergus and Philip in tragic circumstances. Ar dheis de go raibh a n-anamacha."

While one mourner said: "Our sincere condolences on the loss of your lovely sons. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

"Words cannot fill the space of such great boys but only support to you and your family can help you on this sad time. With great sadness , we are thinking of Seamus, Dinah and all the family .

Another added: "I feel words are inadequate, my heartfelt sympathy to you all for the unimaginable grief for Philip and Fergus. 

"Two young men with so much to offer, it is just a devastating loss for your family. 

"My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad and terrible time. Rest in peace Philip & Fergus."

And the Brophy family have now announced that both Philip and Fergus will be laid to rest in Co Laois on Thursday.

A post on RIP.ie for both brothers reads: "Reposing at the family home in Lough Portarlington on Wednesday from 2pm until 8pm.

"Private Removal on Thursday arriving St John's Church Killenard Portarlington for 12 noon Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery."
